The Wreck (Byron Bay) surf guide

The Wreck is a popular surf spot located right in Byron Bay, making it super convenient for both locals and tourists. It’s known for its beach break created by the remnants of an old shipwreck. This spot attracts all kinds of surfers, from beginners to more experienced riders, looking for a session close to town. The vibe here is relaxed, and you’re likely to find a good mix of people enjoying the waves.

The waves are generally best with southeast swells, which roll in nicely and can create some decent rights that break quickly. You might even get lucky with the occasional spitting barrel. Lefts are also available, but they tend to be a bit slower and more shoulder-y, especially as the southeast to east swells arrive at an angle in this deep bay. The Wreck can handle smaller swell sizes starting at about 1 ft (0.3 m) and works well at low, mid, and high tides. The beach break makes it suitable for beginners, while the rights can keep more advanced surfers entertained. A southwesterly wind is preferable here for better wave quality.

Historically, there was an abattoir nearby that contributed to some shark activity in the area. While that’s no longer an issue since the discharge pipe has been removed, it's always good to stay aware of your surroundings when you’re in the water. The Wreck offers a unique surf experience right at the heart of Byron Bay, making it a spot worth checking out.
