880 is a double-sandbar beachbreak at the north end of Clearwater Beach, breaking over sand. Surfing isn't allowed on the patrolled stretch, so surfers head up to this northern end to find the banks. It's a modest spot that rarely turns on, but it's an easy option when there's swell about.
When It Works
880 draws swell from northwest through north to south-southwest. On a north or northwest swell, longboarders can pick off the outside while the wave reforms on the inside for shortboarders, though that inside section dumps quickly in shallow water. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and comes into its own through spring, autumn, and winter. Paddling out is easy most days and only gets a little tougher on the bigger windswell days.
Wind and Tide
The workable wind window runs from north-northeast through east to south-southeast, and you'll want some onshore to put surf on the sandbars. For cleaner faces, look for east offshore wind. It breaks on mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for all levels, from beginners through to experts, and it suits everything from shortboards and funboards to longboards and skimboards. The lineup is usually quiet and can feel a touch reserved, though summer brings the biggest crowds. Watch out for stingrays, and outside of the occasional red tide the water is usually clean.
Access
Getting in is no problem, but keep an eye on the parking, which is sporadic at the north end, so pay attention to the signs.
