Sand Key surf guide

Sand Key is a popular surf spot located on the south side of an inlet, between Clearwater Beach to the north and Belleair Beach to the south. This area is known for its decent waves, especially after a cold front when the conditions improve. Surfing here is a favorite for many in the northern Pinellas County region due to its accessibility and consistent surf.

The surf at Sand Key typically works best with a northwest windswell, producing waves that can range from around 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters). The spot maintains a sand bottom, which is great for beginners, intermediates, and even some experts. It’s good for various board types including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and also for skimming. During mid to high tide, you can expect the waves to roll in nicely, especially with favorable winds coming from the north, northeast, or east. However, on bigger days, paddling can get a bit more challenging, so it’s something to keep in mind.

This spot tends to attract a crowd, especially on post-frontal days, when surfers from around the Champa Bay area come to take advantage of the conditions. Despite the crowds, there's often enough room to find your space. The local vibe is generally friendly, making it a welcoming environment for surfers of all skill levels. It's important to remember to shuffle your feet while entering the water due to the presence of stingrays.
