Batu Mandi surf guide
Batu Mandi is a short and punchy lefthand reef break situated at the southwest tip of the Pangandaran peninsula. It's about a half-hour walk from the main beach. The name translates to "Washing Rock," which hints at the area’s natural vibe. This spot tends to attract experienced surfers due to its sharp reef and the power of the waves, so it's best to be cautious when paddling out.
The surf here breaks hard and hollow over live coral and is most enjoyable on small swells. The optimal swell direction is southwest, which makes it ideal for that angle, but it can also handle south and west swells. Generally, Batu Mandi works best when the swell is around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters). The waves tend to become very shallow at low tide, which means you really need to be aware of your exit; getting caught up in the shutdown end section can be gnarly. The preferable wind direction comes from the east, making mornings a good time to hit the water. If you’re looking for a longer ride, you can check the reef further down towards White Sand Beach during high tide, especially on bigger SW swells.
This is not a spot for beginners. It's definitely meant for expert surfers who are comfortable navigating the challenges of a shallow reef break. Keep in mind to always respect the lineup and maintain safety while enjoying the ride.
