Makapu'u surf guide

Makapu'u Beach is located in the cove just on the north side of Makapu'u Point, which is marked by a lighthouse at Oahu's easternmost point. This spot is known for its bodyboarding and bodysurfing, much like its neighbor, Sandy Beach. The shorebreak can be heavy, hollow, and shallow, making it quite dangerous for inexperienced surfers. For those looking to surf, there’s a spot called Suicides at the northern end of Makapu'u Beach, in front of Sea Life Park. This area offers a racey, hollow right that breaks over shallow rock and reef.

Surfing conditions here depend a lot on the swells. It usually handles sizes from 4 to 8 feet (about 1.2 to 2.4 meters). The best action happens with swells coming from the North, Northeast, and East, especially during winter. The wind should ideally come from the South to Southwest for cleaner waves. The bottom varies as well, with sand in the bay and rock or coral around the reef break at Suicides. Be aware that the wave type can change between beach and reef, and the waves can break both right and left.

Access to Makapu'u Beach is easy with a paved road leading to it, plus plenty of parking at Makapu'u Beach Park. The crowd here is usually chill, but it can get a bit busier when the reef break is firing and conditions are perfect. It's worth keeping the local vibe mellow and friendly. Most of the surf season runs year-round due to the consistent easterly trade winds, but winter seems to deliver the best overall conditions.
