Queens/Canoes surf guide

Queens and Canoes are well-known surf spots in Waikiki, popular for surfers of all kinds. This area has a mix of rideable waves and a lively atmosphere, drawing both locals and visitors. The access is easy, with parking available near Kuhio Beach Park. However, it's important to note that the lineup can get extremely crowded, especially during peak times.

At Queens, you can find some fun ripable waves that can go up to 6 ft (about 1.8 meters) over a forgiving reef. Canoes can handle surf sizes from 5 ft to 10 ft (about 1.5 to 3 meters), making it suitable for everything from longboarders and learners to more advanced surfers looking for a challenge. While Canoes usually works best with a solid south swell and tradewind, it can also get pretty mushy and warbly under 3 ft (about 0.9 meters). The wave direction is both left and right, providing options for different riding preferences. You'll want to check for calm or offshore winds from the north to east for the best conditions. If you're planning to paddle out, get ready for a long paddle to and from the beach, but it's not too bad once you're in the water.

As for the local scene, while the vibe is generally mellow, be prepared for some drop-ins, as sharing the waves is pretty much the norm here. The crowd factor is high, and you’ll often be sharing the waves with other surfers, including some skilled tuberiders on good days. So, whether you’re riding a shortboard, funboard, or longboard, keep an eye out and enjoy the experience. The best seasons for surfing here are spring, summer, and autumn, with optimal conditions from April through October.
