Observation City is a laid-back surf spot located close to the popular beaches of Scarborough, just 2km (1.2mi) south. It's a place where both locals and backpackers find some good vibes and accommodations. The scenery is nice, but when it comes to surfing, you'd better check the conditions before heading out.
The surf here can be pretty average most of the time. It mainly works with swells from the Southwest and West, and you can expect it to handle small waves from around 1ft (0.3m). The waves break over sand, making it a decent spot for beginners. You can catch both left and right waves, which is a plus. For the best sessions, you'll want to aim for low, mid, or high tide, and it's ideal if there's an east wind. However, don't get your hopes up too much unless you find that rare combo of good swell and wind.
In the afternoons, you'll notice plenty of kiters enjoying the breeze, so if surfing isn't working out, you can always watch or join them. Just be mindful of the busy atmosphere during peak times, as it can get a bit crowded on the water. Overall, Observation City can be a chill spot to catch some waves if the conditions align.
