Strickland Bay is a popular surf spot located on Rottnest Island, known for being one of the most consistent breaks in the area. The only way to get around the island is by bicycle, and many surfers cycle straight to Strickland Bay to catch some waves. The spot features a scenic environment and tends to get crowded, especially since it’s more accessible for surfers than some of the more intense reefs around. However, it’s still not recommended for beginners due to its sharp reef.
The waves here primarily break over a rock ledge and provide superb lefts that can reach up to 12ft (4m), especially on good days. You can also find decent rights when the swell is smaller, making it versatile for different surf conditions. The optimal swell direction is SouthWest, with good wave action coming from the South and SouthWest. It handles swell sizes starting from around 2ft (0.6m). For the best experience, NorthWest winds are preferable, and the breaks work well during low to mid tides. Strickland Bay is ideal for intermediate surfers looking to improve their skills.
While it’s a popular spot, the defined channels help less experienced surfers find their way in and pick off a few waves. However, having booties is a smart choice due to the sharp reef. So, if you're heading to Strickland Bay, make sure you're ready for an enjoyable session without assuming it will be easy sailing.
