Surf: Tulear itself is sheltered by offshore reefs and feels more like a huge, dusty harbour town than a resort. La Batterie is a 10min drive north by taxi to a long sandy beach and a left at one of the rivermouths, but it’s only worth checking on a big swell and no rain.
