Venice Beach surf guide

Venice Beach is a well-known surf spot located in Los Angeles, California. It's right outside the city, making it a popular place for both locals and visitors. The area features a couple of jetties, which can sometimes help the surf, but it's important to note that closeout waves are pretty common here. The best time to catch good waves is generally during the autumn and winter months, from October to April, especially when the conditions align.

The surf at Venice Beach can be hit or miss. Ideal swell sizes range from about 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters), and it mainly handles swells coming from the South-Southwest to West directions. You'll often find beach breaks as well as some action near the jetties, which can offer right and left waves. It's best with a medium to high tide, but it doesn’t do well with swells over 8 feet (about 2.4 meters). When the swell hits right, it’s enjoyable for beginner and intermediate surfers alike. Watch out for the currents, especially with a strong SSW swell; they can get pretty intense.

Getting to the waves is fairly straightforward. The parking lot at Bay Street is the most convenient option for access. On any given day, you can expect a decent number of surfers out in the water, particularly if the conditions are even halfway decent. The local vibe here is pretty chill, reflecting the peace and love culture of Venice. Just keep in mind that crowd factor can change quickly, so be ready to share the waves!
