Praia da Macumba surf guide

Praia da Macumba is a surf spot located just on the west side of a small island you’ll see while driving along Barra Beach. This beach break is pretty accessible and tends to get crowded most of the time. The vibe here is usually chill, although it can vary with the crowd size. It's a spot that attracts surfers of all skill levels, making it a popular choice for local riders and visitors alike.

The surf at Macumba works best with swells from the S to SSW and can pick up smaller swells from the ESE. It’s often at its best during low to mid tide, but it breaks on all tides, providing good options for surfers. When the waves are smaller, it can still be enjoyable, especially with longboard gear, as it tends to produce longer rides. Swell sizes can range from chest high (about 1 meter) up to 2X overhead (about 3 meters) or more, so it handles a variety of conditions well. The left side breaks slower and fatter, while the right side offers faster, hollower waves. The sand bottom makes for a softer landing, but don’t forget to watch out for other surfers, especially on smaller days.

For the best conditions, wind from the NNW to N is preferable, and autumn and winter months are the prime seasons for a solid surf experience. The paddle out is generally easy, but can get a bit long on bigger days. Whether you're on a shortboard, funboard, or longboard, this spot is worth checking out, just be ready for a bit of company on the waves!
