Puerto Viejo surf guide

Puerto Viejo is a popular surf spot located in the Lima region, recognized for its long rides and beautiful scenery. It stands out as a place where surfers can catch a good wave under the right conditions. It's important to note that while the waves can be fun, they do have their limits and are not ideal for every swell size.

The surf works best with a south swell, producing waves that can range from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and will break over sand. You can catch lefts here that provide a smooth ride, and it can handle low, mid, and high tides. For the best experience, southeast winds are preferred. It’s a solid option for intermediate surfers, offering enjoyable linear walls with some playful pockets without being too challenging. Just be mindful that it's not meant for larger swells, and anything double overhead can get rough.

Be aware of the strong currents and shorebreak, especially during bigger swells. It can get crowded on weekends when the local surfers come out, so timing your sessions during the week might give you a more relaxed experience. If the waves are small, consider heading further up the beach to the Tres Islas area for some fun, quick rides on the sandbanks.
