Rest Bay is a popular beach in the area known for its consistent surf and well-formed beachbreak peaks. It's a busy spot, especially with tourists, so be prepared for some company out in the water. Access is easy thanks to a large car park located just back from the beach, making it a convenient choice for surfers looking to catch some waves.
The surf here can range from thigh high to overhead (about 0.5 to 2 meters) and handles swell sizes from 1ft to 6ft (0.3 to 1.8 meters). The best conditions usually pop up during low to mid tide, with southern peaks being the most favored. When the conditions line up with a southwest to west swell and an east or northeast wind, you can expect some decent left and right beach breaks. The banks are fairly consistent, producing good walling waves, making it suitable for beginners and intermediates alike. It's worth noting that paddling is manageable unless the surf gets really big, but rocks can be a hazard near high tide.
Rest Bay works pretty much year-round, but you'll find the best waves from September through February in the autumn and winter months. A variety of boards can be used here, so whether you ride a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, SUP, or bodyboard, you should find something that fits your style. Just keep in mind that the beach can get really crowded due to the local crew, but generally, the vibe is relaxed as long as you’re respectful to everyone sharing the lineup.
