Swamis surf guide

Swamis is a well-known surf spot located in Encinitas, California, right near the Self-Realization Fellowship. This spot is special because it offers a right reef point break, which is not too common in San Diego. It's a popular spot for surfers, especially during the winter months when the waves get pretty consistent. While you might find decent waves here year-round, it does need a solid swell to really show its potential. When it gets going, it can be the center of action for surfers in North County.

At Swamis, you'll find waves ranging from waist high (about 0.6 m) to well over double overhead (around 4.5 m). The best conditions usually come from a west or northwest swell within 15 seconds or less. The tide plays a big role, with lower tides making for faster and steeper waves. As you paddle out, watch for the drop; it’s generally mellow at first, but then the wave really picks up speed as it works its way across the shallow ledge towards the inside. Most of the rides are right-handers, but there's a left you can grab if things aren't going your way. It’s a good idea to have at least intermediate skills here, since it can get hectic with locals paddling out and waiting for their turn.

If you decide to surf Swamis, be prepared for the crowd. It can be pretty packed, especially on good days when the waves are firing. The local vibe has its ups and downs, so while you might encounter some friendly faces, expect some competitive energy in the water. Paddling back after a good ride will also require some effort, as it’s a long haul back to the lineup. The season here generally runs from autumn through winter, with the best conditions showing up from November to March. Bring your shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or even bodyboard to make the most of the waves.
