Hellstø is a popular surf spot located about 10 minutes' drive north of Bore. Known for its scenic beauty, it offers a unique blend of surf opportunities and marine life experiences. The beach can get a bit crowded, especially in the summer months, and you may need to pay for parking during that time.
This spot works best on W-NW swells, with an optimal swell direction from the west. It can handle swell sizes as small as 1 foot (0.3 meters) and breaks over sand, making it a beach break. Hellstø features both left and right waves, which can be a fun experience. The best wind direction for surfing here is from the east, and it’s good to surf during low, mid, or high tide. Intermediate surfers will find it suitable, but keep in mind that classic days when the surf is lined up can offer more hollow waves than Bore, even though it’s not as consistent.
If you’re interested in exploring beyond surfing, the northern end of the beach is well-known for diving and snorkeling. You can find beautiful underwater kelp forests, colorful sponges, and some striking marine life. Just be cautious of the currents while you’re in the water. Also, keep an eye out for the youngest grommet in Norway, a 10-year-old surfing regularly at Hellstø, who might surprise you with his skills!
