Peñarol is a somewhat hidden gem located in a protected bay behind Isla Santa Maria. This surf spot is known for its desert-like surroundings, giving it a secluded feel. It’s a place where surfers can find some peace, away from the crowded beaches. While it may not attract the biggest crowds, those who know about it often appreciate its unique vibe.
The surf at Peñarol is best when the swell is coming from the NorthWest, but it can also handle West and North swells. The waves usually break over an uneven reef, so be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride. You can expect both left and right waves, with the lefts leading into a rocky cove being fairly common. For the best surf, look for swells over 5ft (about 1.5 meters), especially since the spot can get sectiony if the swell isn’t just right. Intermediate surfers will find this spot suitable, and the waves can be fun during low, mid, and high tides. A Southeast wind is generally the best for this area.
While Peñarol mainly caters to surfers, it’s also a spot where windsurfing and sea kayaking are popular due to its sheltered waters. If you’re planning a session here, it’s a good idea to be aware of the conditions in the bay and adjust your plans accordingly. Just make sure to check the swell size and direction before heading out.
