Perranporth (Droskyn) surf guide

Perranporth (Droskyn) is a well-known surf spot located on a large westerly facing beach. It’s the main town beach and stretches for miles, making it a great place for surfers of different levels. With a relaxed vibe, this spot attracts both beginners and more experienced surfers looking for some space in the water. Getting there is simple, with parking available on the cliff above Droskyn Point. The environment here is pretty clean, which adds to the overall experience.

The surf at Droskyn works best with a swell from the NW, W, or SW, handling sizes from about 2 to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.8 meters). At low to mid-tide, you can find a good left breaking wave in front of the cliffs, especially if the river has shaped the sandbar. The breaks are over sand, making it easier to paddle out, but watch for some backwash at high tide that can create bumpy conditions. While this spot is generally average on most days, it can still provide decent waves, especially for beginners and intermediates. Experienced surfers should take note that the water entry is safer from the beach rather than the cliff path at Droskyn Head.

The preferred wind direction is southeast, which can help with the surf quality, while the waves usually provide plenty of space to spread out, avoiding overcrowding. Given its size and conditions, it's suitable for various board types, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish. Autumn is typically the best season to hit the waves here, with favorable conditions that attract surfers throughout the season.
