Praia Azul is a long stretch of sand that serves as one of the most consistent surfing spots in the area. It features a variety of sandbars and some sand-covered reefs, making it suitable for surfers looking for different types of waves. The beach is easily accessible with beachfront parking and a cliff-top car park, and although it can get popular, there are plenty of peaks to find your own wave.
The surf here is mostly a beach break that works well with mid-tide. It handles swell sizes from 2ft to 8ft (about 0.6m to 2.4m), favoring northwest swells but also picking up southwest and north swells. You can catch some fun lefts and rights along the beach, while the northern end offers a right-hand reef that can be a nice option. The optimal wind direction is from the east, and overall, it’s a good wave for different board types, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards.
Best surf conditions are found from June to November, during the summer and autumn months. While the waves can be enjoyed by a range of surfers, including experts, keep in mind that when the swell gets big, conditions can turn heavy and rippy. So, know your limits and enjoy the ride!
