Cardiff Reef surf guide

Cardiff Reef is a popular surf spot located right off the 101. It’s known for its consistent waves and beautiful scenery. Although it can get pretty crowded due to its reputation, there's usually enough space to find your own wave. Access is easy from the pay lot directly in front of the break.

The surf here can be pretty fun, especially with the right swell. In the summer months, the waves tend to be softer, but as winter rolls in, they really pick up. The best swells come from the west, but you can also catch decent waves from the south and northwest. The reef to the north is called Tippers, which offers fast lefts and shorter, mushy rights. Be careful, though, as it can get intense and crowded. Just to the south is Suckouts, known for its challenging right-hand barrels that break over a very shallow reef, so this one’s really for experts only. If you prefer something a bit more mellow, check out the South Peak in front of the parking lot. It features long, quality rights that can line up well, especially during low tide. Watch out during big swells, as it can be hard to get out.

At Cardiff Reef, you can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and going up, breaking over rock ledges and sand. The preferred wind direction is from the east, and the spot works well at low, mid, and high tide. This surf spot is definitely more suited for those with expert abilities, so make sure you’re ready to tackle it. Whether you’re looking to throw down some turns or go for a barrel, Cardiff Reef has something to offer, as long as you’re okay with sharing the waves.
