Mareta is a surf spot located in a southwesterly facing town. It's a good place to check out when other local breaks are maxed out and experiencing onshore winds. The beach needs a decent NW swell to really wrap in, but when conditions are right, it can produce some fun waves. It’s worth noting that it can get quite busy here, especially when other spots aren’t working. Parking is available overlooking the beach, making access pretty easy.
The waves at Mareta can range from waist to head high (about 1 to 3 meters) and work best at low to mid high tide. You’ll find both left and right breaks over a sandy bottom. The spot can handle swells from 5ft to 10ft (1.5 to 3 meters), particularly from the NW to SW. The waves can be hollow and bowl-like, but they are generally unspectacular. With a bit of wind from the NE, the conditions can be fun for all abilities, especially beginners. Just be mindful of the rips when the waves get big.
Crowds can be a factor, especially during the winter holiday months. This spot is known to get a bit hassly when it’s busy, so be prepared for some competition in the line-up. If you're riding the right board type—whether it's a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or even bodyboard—you can have a good session here, particularly from December to February, which is the best time of year to surf Mareta.
