Rockpile is located between Log Cabins and Off-The-Wall, right in front of a pile of rocks, which gives it its name. This surf spot offers a big, powerful left that works best on NW to WNW angled swells, along with an occasional right when the swell comes from the north. When a northerly swell hits, Rockpile can pull in more size than other spots in the area, making it a favorite for those chasing bigger waves. Be mindful that during large swells, the Kam Hwy can sometimes get washed out near this spot.
The surf at Rockpile can be pretty tricky. It's known to break over an uneven reef, requiring expert-level skills, especially as the size increases. The waves can reach 8 to 10 feet (around 2.5 to 3 meters) or larger, and as it gets bigger, the break moves further out, making for a longer paddle. The lefts here can barrel nicely, but it needs the right conditions—calm or light to moderate E to S winds are preferable. Works well at low, mid, or high tides, but keep in mind that the best action is often during the winter and into the spring season.
Accessing Rockpile is relatively easy; you can park at the lot next to the lifeguard tower or along the Kam Highway where it's allowed. The crowd factor tends to be lighter compared to Pipe, especially when the waves are bigger, but don't underestimate it. The local vibe is all about humility and respect, so keep that in mind when hitting the water.
