Sopelana surf guide
Surf: Very consistent beachbreak with several peaks. Good semi-permanent high-tide peak at western end of beach. Works on small to medium swells.
Environment: One of the most crowded spots in Spain. Highly competitive. Access from either end of the beach, but parking is restricted year-round and metered in summer. Every facility available including surf school. Surf shops and camping nearby. Estuarine and stormwater pollution, particularly after heavy rains.
Surf: General: Atxibiribil and Arrietara are just two of the high quality beaches here that break consistently through the tides. There are a number of beach break banks plus fingers of reef. The most famous spot is found at La Salvaje and is known as La Triangular - a rocky shelf of striated reef that produces - as the name suggests - excellent rights and lefts. The area is home to some of Europe's best surfers - will be crowded.
Tides: All tides
Size: Waist high to overhead.
Wind: SE
Swell: NW, WNW
Bottom: Sandbanks with reefs.
Paddling: Beach can be a heavy paddle out.
Spot Rating: Most flexible spot in the area with good banks and excellent reef; generations of chargers raised here.
Access: Plenty of cliff top parking above the breaks.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Busy with a high standard of surfers.
Local Vibe: Super competitive.
Environment: OK in summer, usually poor after rain.
Hazards: Powerful waves, strong rips, crowds.
Season: Works year round but best September - May.
