Steamer Lane – Middle Peak is one of the well-known surf spots in Santa Cruz, California. It features several reefs extending west from the access stairs, collectively known as Middle Peak. These reefs are divided into First, Second, and Third reefs, and they attract surfers looking for a variety of wave conditions. This spot can get quite busy, especially on good days, so be prepared to share the water with other surfers.
The surf here is best when the swell comes from the North-West, but it can handle swells coming from the South as well. You'll find that Middle Peak can work at different sizes, ranging from 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and up. The waves typically break over uneven reefs and sand, which creates some heavier drops followed by a softer right-hand shoulder. If you're interested in lefts, they tend to be steeper and can get hollower, but watch out for getting caught inside when the sets roll in. The wave conditions can change quickly, so the line-up gets a bit hectic, and it’s definitely a spot where intermediate surfers will want to stay on their toes.
When you're out there, keep an eye out for the local wildlife; it's not uncommon to see sea otters or seals while you paddle through the kelp. The spot is consistent and can work during low, mid, or even high tides, making it a popular choice for surfers of various skill levels. Parking is available along the point and at the nearby Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, giving you easier access to the water.
