Steamer Lane – The Point is a well-known surf spot located on the West Side of Santa Cruz, California. It features a diverse array of kelp-covered reefs and point breaks tucked beneath sandstone bluffs. This spot is popular among surfers due to its consistent swell and the ability to handle a variety of conditions. It's a busy spot, so expect some crowds as this line-up is one of the most consistently packed in the country.
The Point usually works best on a swell from the south, but it can handle swells from the northwest and offers decent conditions with wave sizes starting at about 3 feet (0.9 meters). The waves break over uneven reef and sand, predominantly providing right-handers. While it can deliver hollow and thick waves at the right swell, be aware that backwash can mess things up a bit during high tides. Also, it's important to note that the take-off zone is tight and competitive, which requires some experience—intermediate surfers will feel more at home here.
The surrounding environment is vibrant with wildlife, so you might encounter sea otters or seals while paddling out through the kelp. The Point is accessible with parking available along the shoreline and near the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse. The area is a great spot for both serious surfers and those just looking to enjoy the buzz of a busy surf scene.
