The Rivermouth is a surf spot where the San Lorenzo River meets the ocean, located right in the heart of town. It’s a popular place for locals and tourists alike, especially when the conditions are right. The spot tends to get crowded, particularly when surf is up, so be prepared to share the waves with other surfers.
This spot works best with swell coming from the NorthWest or South, with a sweet spot around 2 to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.8 meters). You can expect to catch some nice right-handers and, occasionally, a good left if the sandbars align just right. The waves break over sand, making it a beach break, and it’s best during low to mid-tide. The winds from the North are preferable for cleaner conditions. Keep in mind that this is generally suited for intermediate surfers due to the potential for rips and variable conditions.
The Rivermouth’s set-up is influenced by the rainfall and river flow in the area, contributing to whether it has good or off years. When it’s firing, you might just find some of the best peaks around. Just check the surf report and head down when it looks promising!
