Crackneck surf guide

Crackneck is a surf spot that sits at the end of some typical Aussie flat shelf strata. It’s somewhat secluded, making it a good option for surfers looking for a less crowded experience. This spot is known for its fast-breaking left-hand reef break, which definitely caters to more adventurous surfers. To get there, head to the Hilltop Street car park and take a walk down to the surf zone.

The best conditions for Crackneck happen with northeast to east swells, especially when you’re looking at swell sizes around 3ft (about 1 meter). The waves break over a rocky ledge, giving surfers the option for both left and right rides. However, this spot is strictly for experts, as it can get pretty intense, especially at low to mid tide. For wind, the best direction is from the west, which helps keep the waves clean and fun.

Keep in mind that Crackneck can often get crowded, even though it has medium consistency. It’s a good idea to check the conditions from the Hilltop Street lookout south of Bateau Bay before heading down. Since it’s mainly for expert surfers, make sure you’re comfortable with challenging waves before paddling out.
