Ogunquit Rivermouth surf guide

The Ogunquit Rivermouth is the most recognized surf spot in Maine. It’s known for its rivermouth break at Lobster Point which can dish out some fun waves. The surf here generally offers long, workable rights and fast lefts. However, the quality of the waves can change depending on the swell direction and how the shifting sand settles at the bottom. It works best with swells ranging from 3ft to 8ft (0.9m to 2.4m) and handles pretty well during incoming tides. Locals often ride here during the autumn and winter months, but if conditions aren’t right, many will head to nearby Kennebunkport.

When it’s firing, the waves start breaking in front of the rocks and peel across the rivermouth onto the inside banks. You can find those nice zippery walls and even some barrel sections when the swell is on point. The lefts can reform and break back into the river flow and tend to be consistent when swells are smaller. The best conditions come from a Southeast swell with a West wind, making it great for various skill levels, from beginners to experts. However, keep in mind the wave quality can be inconsistent, influenced by the river’s shifting sand.

Access to the spot is pretty straightforward, but parking can be tricky, especially in summer when it gets crowded. The main beach has a large lot but can be pricey. If you’re willing to walk a little, you’ll find some cheaper options in town. Expect to see many surfers out, especially in summer, with crowds mixing in at the rivermouth while the main beach might have more space. The vibe here can shift based on the swell, so be ready for different surfer moods!
