Short Sands is a surf spot located in a State Park in Maine. It’s a beachbreak that can be a bit tricky but worthwhile when conditions are right. While it’s free to access in the winter, keep in mind that surfing is completely banned here during the summer months. The beach sees fewer crowds in the colder months, making it a good option for those looking for some space to surf.
This spot works best with a decent NorthEast swell (around 0.6 meters) to bring some punchy waves. It can handle swell sizes as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and breaks primarily over sand. You’ll find a mix of short rights and longer barreling lefts, and it can really come alive when the tide is low, mid, or high. Be aware that this wave is more suited for experts, as it can be pretty challenging and punishes those who aren't cautious.
When it comes to wind, a SouthWest breeze is preferable, as it tends to clean up the waves nicely. However, do keep in mind that there’s usually a current present, so be prepared for that. If you’re up for it, Short Sands can be a fun spot to surf, as long as you come prepared and know what you’re getting into.
