Seaside Heights/Casino Pier is a popular surf spot along the New Jersey coast. Although the pier is smaller now after Hurricane Sandy, it still draws in surfers looking for fun waves. The area can get really crowded during the summer months, with visitors flocking to the boardwalk and beach. Outside of the busy summer season, the vibe is more relaxed, making it easier for surfers to catch some waves.
The surf here is pretty varied, with the ability to handle swell sizes from 2ft to 12ft (about 0.6 to 3.7 meters). The best swell directions are east and northeast, and you'll find both left and right breaking waves. The south side of the pier can produce a nice right bowl at mid to high tide, while the north side tends to offer a less powerful left on southerly swells. The waves break over a sandy bottom, making it beginner-friendly, although you should always be cautious of the crowds and local vibe, especially during peak times. Generally, mid-tide tends to work well, and winds from the west are preferable for cleaner conditions.
During the fall and winter months, from September through March, the surf is often more consistent with a good crowd of surfers taking advantage of the conditions. Keep in mind that the local surfing scene has a solid crew that can get pretty protective of their waves, so be respectful and patient. Overall, when the sand is set up right, it can be one of the better spots in the area for both fish and shortboard riders.
