Desperation Point is a surf spot located south of New Plymouth on State Highway 45, near Opunake. It’s known for its big wave peaks, making it more suitable for intermediate surfers. The spot is not overly crowded, which can be a nice change compared to some other places. The paddle out can be a workout since it’s a bit of a distance to the break, so be prepared for that.
The ideal swell direction is from the Southwest, but it can also handle swells coming from the South and Northwest. It works best at low to mid tide and can handle swell sizes starting at 3 ft (about 0.9 meters). The waves break over an uneven reef and offer both left and right rides. When the wind is coming from the Northeast, that’s when you’ll find the better conditions, while any South or West winds can make things choppy and less appealing. The waves can be punchy, with some nice walls, especially at low tide, but lining up can be tricky due to the shifting nature of the swell.
For getting there, after you head south from New Plymouth, take Layard Street South West to reach the point. You'll then have a short walk down to the water. Keep in mind that the conditions can shift quite a bit, so check the surf report before heading out to make the most of your session at Desperation Point.
