Komene Road is a surf spot located about 2 kilometers south of The Patch. It’s not as popular as some nearby spots, which means it can be a good choice if you’re looking to avoid crowds. To get there, head south from New Plymouth on Devon Street West, take South Road (the Surf Highway, State Highway 45), continue through Okato, and make a right onto Komene Road. Drive to the end and you'll find the beach just a short walk away.
The surf here works best with a southwest swell but can also pick up northwest swells. It handles wave sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and breaks over boulders and sand. Expect mainly left point waves, which can be fun for those with some experience. This spot is suitable for intermediate surfers, as it can get a bit tricky. The best conditions generally happen at low to mid tide, with the preferable wind coming from the southeast.
Remember that this isn’t a beginner-friendly area, so make sure you're comfortable in the water before paddling out. With rocky peaks along the way from the Stony River mouth, there’s a little something for everyone, but it’s best to have some surfing experience under your belt.
