Dunes, located in Puerto Rico, offers a quieter alternative to the more crowded surf spots. While Rincon and Isabela often steal the limelight, Dunes sits next to Middles and features a mix of reefs that can provide fun waves. The atmosphere is chill, and you might find fewer surfers around, making it easier to catch a wave.
This spot works best with north-east swells, but it can handle north-west ones too. The waves break over an uneven reef and can range from 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) or more, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. You can ride both lefts and rights here, depending on the wave conditions. The best time to hit the water is during low to mid or even high tides, especially when the wind is coming from the south.
Since the reef is quite shallow, be mindful of where you paddle out. The sandy beaches around Dunes are nice, but getting to the waves will require some care due to the uneven ground. This spot can be a fun place to surf, especially when you want to escape the bigger crowds elsewhere.
