Waitara Bar surf guide

Surf: If a good winter swell is running and the wind is calm (unusual for this region) or from the S, excellent peaks will pound the pebbles and transient sandbars at the Waitara Bar rivermouth. The East Beach side gets nice A-frames forming, but across the river a good left can form and there are reefs in the area also. Directions: From New Plymouth city centre head east on Devon Street east, then continue onto State Highway 3 out of town. When you get near Waitara turn left onto Devon Street and onto Nelson Street, heading into Waitara. the road will turn to the right onto McLean Street and across the Waitara River. Turn left onto Leslie Street, then left onto Howard Street, which will bring you to the beach on the eastern side of the river, and also the board riders club. Environment: Not known for its welcoming vibe and it isn't too consistent or particularly clean either.
