Sand Island surf guide

Sand Island is a surf spot located within the Sand Island State Recreation Area, not too far from town but often feels a bit tucked away from the crowds. This spot features a nice stretch of white sand and is lined with hulking warehouses and shipyards, making it a unique setting. There are some reefy peaks around that can be fun for surfers looking to catch waves without the hassle of large crowds. While it can get busy during weekend swells, most of the time you can find a peaceful session here.

The waves at Sand Island are typically best with south to southwest swells, handling sizes from about 1.5 meters (5 feet) to 3 meters (10 feet). You can expect both left and right breaks, making it a spot that suits various abilities, from beginners to more experienced surfers. The optimal wind comes from the north, which helps shape the waves nicely. Whether you’re riding a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or even bodyboarding, there’s something here for everyone. The reef bottom provides a good punch, so know that you’ll be dealing with a little bit of reef action while you paddle around.

Access is quite easy, and the laid-back vibe makes it a chill place to hang out after a session. The area allows for camping, and you'll find showers here as well. Just be mindful of the tides, as low, mid, and high tides all work here, but the wave quality can change. While shark sightings are known to happen, it’s more of a heads-up than a serious concern. Overall, Sand Island is an average surf spot most of the time, but it can offer some fun waves with less hassle than more popular locations.
