Hammond's surf guide

Hammond's is a right point break located in a more exclusive area, known for its challenging access and local vibe. The spot can be tricky to reach, as you'll either need to valet at the Four Seasons or find parking outside the hotel and make the walk. It’s not the most beginner-friendly place, so be ready for a bit of a trek before you hit the waves. With a season that typically runs from October to February, you’ll find the best surf during the autumn and winter months.

The waves at Hammond's generally handle sizes from 5 to 12 feet (1.5 to 3.7 meters). The best swells come from the west and northwest, and the spot works best with a swell period under 15 seconds. When the conditions are right, you're looking at a quality right reef break. It’s usually less than a few feet overhead, but when Santa Barbara is pumping, Hammond's can really come alive. As the wave approaches the inside, it bends back and forms a bowl, which can be fun but also requires some skill to navigate. While the usual paddle out is average, you might find yourself waiting a while for waves, so be ready for some downtime.

The wind from the north to northeast is preferable, and the tides typically work best when they’re incoming, especially during low to mid tide. Expect a tight crowd, as local surfers are pretty hungry for a good wave. Also, be mindful that drop-ins can happen, so make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. Most surfers here are intermediate to expert level, so it’s a good idea to have your shortboard ready for this one.
