Topaz Street surf guide
Surf: Sandbar lefts on the north side of the jetty. Picks up most any swell (except a straight S) and is sheltered from S storm winds, so it’s a good call when there’s rain and some winter swell action. Needs lower tide and swell up to about a foot or two overhead.
Environment: Access is at the foot of Topaz Street in Redondo Beach.
Surf: General: Sapphire Street and the neighboring Topaz Jetty mark the south end of the King Harbor Marina in Redondo Beach. Only works on W and NW short to mid period swells thanks to the Redondo Submarine Canyon right out front which refracts longer period swells away from the area. Completely shadowed from south/summer swells.
Tides: Low to medium
Size: Waist high to a few feet overhead
Wind: E, SE, ENE
Swell: W, NW
Bottom: Sand.
Paddling: Usually an easy paddle next to the jetty.
Spot Rating: Place to go when it is blown out everywhere else, but usually worth looking elsewhere except on short period swells.
Access: Easy, free parking on Esplanade and access through Topaz street.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Always a crowd if there are waves.
Local Vibe: Mellow.
Environment: It's right outside of LA and can get particularly bad after a rainfall.
Hazards: Unskilled surfers in line-up when it is small. Shallow sandbars on the south side of the jetty.
Season: Winter when large storms drop down into SoCal
