Newport Lower Jetties surf guide

Newport Lower Jetties is a nice surf spot located near 36th Street. It's often less crowded than some of the surrounding areas, making it a decent choice for local surfers looking to enjoy a session without the hustle of bigger breaks like 28th Street and Blackies. This spot is generally suitable for beginners and average surfers, especially during the summer when the waves are smaller and more forgiving. On days with bigger swells, you’ll find fun peaks and left walls, particularly when the south winds are blowing.

The surfing here is mainly a beach break over sand, providing waves that handle sizes from around 4ft (1.2m) to 8ft (2.4m). You can catch both right and left waves, with the best conditions typically occurring on SSE, S, SSW, and W swells. When the tide is in the low to mid range, waves can be playful and fun, especially during spring and summer. The wind direction is ideally from the north to northeast, but you can still score decent waves with the right swell combinations in the fall and winter months. Just keep in mind that the paddle out can be a bit of a workout during stronger south or northwest swells.

Accessing the beach is straightforward, with street parking available nearby. It’s a good idea to check the street-sweeping schedule since available spots can be limited. After rain, the water quality might dip, so it’s best to wait for clearer days. Overall, the local vibe is mostly chill, making it enjoyable for a range of surfers. Just watch out for beginners on big boards, and be mindful of the jetty when paddling out.
