Le Penon is a popular surf spot located along a stretch of sandy beach, where surfers can find some quality waves. It used to have a long metal pier that helped create some decent sandbars. This area attracts both locals and travelers, especially those looking to escape the busier breaks further south. The scene here can get crowded, especially in summer, but you'll still find it somewhat less hectic compared to the hot spots in Hossegor.
The waves at Le Penon can be fun, with a good mix of lefts and rights breaking over sandy bottoms. The spot works well with swells coming from the NorthWest and West, handling sizes from about 1 meter (3 feet) to 2.5 meters (8 feet). You can expect the best surf during low to mid to high tides, making for some solid beach breaks that are suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced surfers. The rip currents can get strong when the waves pick up, so be cautious and stay aware of the conditions. On good days, it can serve up fun peaks with long walls that make for enjoyable rides.
Getting to Le Penon is straightforward with a large car park right behind the dunes. Just keep in mind that car crime can be an issue at the north end. This spot accommodates various types of boards, including shortboards, fish, longboards, bodyboards, and even bodysurfing. While there’s a mini skatepark nearby, serious skaters might want to check out Hall04 instead. The best time to surf here is generally from September to November, when conditions are often favorable.
