La Cote des Basques surf guide

La Côte des Basques is a well-known surf spot located in Biarritz, France. It's famous for its scenic views and its significance in the history of French surfing. The beach is beautiful and attracts plenty of visitors, especially during the summer months when the vibe is lively. Keep in mind that it can get pretty busy since it's a popular destination for both surfers and beachgoers.

The surf here is generally best suited for beginners and intermediates. The waves can range from 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters), with the northern end being a longboard-friendly zone that offers mellow waves and fun peaks. As you head towards the south, the swell picks up a bit more power. You'll find the waves breaking over sand, making it a comfortable spot to ride. Both left and right waves are available, with the best conditions on low to mid and mid to high tide. Ideal wind directions are east, southeast, and east-southeast, which help keep things fun and manageable.

Getting to the beach can be a mission due to limited parking. The best bet is to park at the cliff top car park on Avenue Beau Rivage and take the zigzag path down to the beach. And watch out for the crowds, especially in summer; it’s popular with surf schools and beginners. The local vibe is pretty chill and generally tolerant, so most surfers will find a decent atmosphere. Autumn, particularly September to November, is considered the golden season for a great surf experience here.
