On high tides the cultured sandbars of the Waiwakaiho rivermouth can be excellent. Picks up more swell than Fitzroy and has rights back into the river flow or longer lefts spinning up the beach.
From New Plymouth city centre head east on Devon Street east, then continue straight onto Clemow Road. Follow this all the way around past the golf course and lake to the breakwater at the eastern end of Fitzroy beach. From here its a paddle across the Waiwhakaiho River to the eastern side of the mouth. Alternatively you can head to Fitzroy beach and walk along the coastal walk way to the eastern end of the beach and across the river.
Gets a crowd whenever it's working so manners are essential.
