South Bird Rock is located at the end of Bird Rock Avenue, just north of Pacific Beach Point and about half a mile south of Windansea. This area is recognized for a couple of reefbreaks, mainly South Bird Rock and North Bird Rock, surrounded by some lesser quality sub reefs. It’s a popular spot among surfers in the San Diego area due to its unique features.
This spot works best during the spring and summer months but can hold its own year-round. South Bird Rock can handle swells from 3ft to 12ft (about 1m to 3.7m), with an optimal swell direction coming from the SouthWest. You’ll find both left and right waves here, making it suitable for surfers at various skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Ideally, the waves break over the rock ledge, producing some fun peaks, but they can be soft and inconsistent during smaller swells. The preferred wind direction is out of the NorthEast, and the spot is best during low to mid tides, although it can break at higher tides too.
When you show up, be ready for a bit of a hike to get to the lineup, as you'll need to negotiate some rocks along the way. Be aware that the crowds can be intense, so you’ll want to paddle hard to get your share of the waves. Local surfers can be competitive and a bit surly, so it’s best to be respectful in the water. The type of boards that work well here are shortboards, fish, funboards, and even longboards, depending on the conditions.
